NBC News reports that smoking
contributes to 1 in 4 cancer
deaths in the U.S. The rate is
highest amongst males in the
southern states, with the
highest rate of 40% in
in Arkansas; while Kentucky
had the highest rate amongst
women with 29%. This can
also be attributed to the laws
about tobacco use and
consumption being generally
more lax in the south due to
Big Tobacco's direct impact
on the local economies as
Industry.
Romancing The Smoke is John Aaron's blog about his lifelong battle to quit smoking (which he did more than nine years ago) and the stories, history and news in the absurd world of Tobacco and Nicotine. North Korea allows chimpanzees to smoke....
CBS reports today that the new zoo
in Pyongyang, North Korea features
Azalea, the smoking chimpanzee.
While there is, no doubt, some really
bad gag here that protocol prevents
the writer from creating comparisons,
the primate smokes a pack a day. Of
course, zoo officials insist that she
doesn't inhale. The new zoo, it is said,
is one of N. Korean leader Kim Jong
Un's prides of his regime. The original
zoo it replaced began with 50 badgers.

Legal age to buy tobacco is raised to 21 in California!
Amazing to think that this
would actually happen in
my lifetime. Thank you
Gov. Brown for bearing
down on this idea. Will
be interested to see what
percentage change in the
use of tobacco will be
this time next year...
The law went into effect
June 9, 2016. Great reason
for young folks to quit.
ABC News: California's Smoking Age went up to 21 June 9...
Once you quit, don't ever
listen to the Habit again...
just say-
GO AWAY!

Hooray!
Thank you Gov. Brown...
Law takes effect June 9.
Perhaps we take it a step
further and raise the age
to 56....

Book in Progress...Aaron's Book of Contemporary Demons
While the concept of demons
is timeless, we face a new crop
of realized monsters in the
21st century. Many addictions
and phobias, as well as mental
health conditions are finally
being seen for what they are-
Stigmas are disappearing and
many problems that have plagued
us are now being talked about,
diagnosed and treated...
Aaron's Book of Contemporary
Demons is in process and
progressing nicely. My second
book will put a face or image to
many previously unvisualized things.
The book is due out this fall...

A new memoir out this month by writer Sean Daly...
Those of you who follow
Romancing The Smoke
and our escapades might
be figuring I...
a) went back to smoking
so I went into hiding;
b) keeled over from the damage
it had done;
c) lost interest in encouraging
folks to quit;
d) started another book...
...actually two books. The first-
I did the illustrations for
The Things We Talk About
When We Talk About Cancer
by Sean Daly. Sean never smoked.
His compelling memoir about
his ongoing battle with Stage Four
cancer has sixteen illustrations,
and is going to print in April. It
is an honor to be the graphic part
of this effort. Looking forward
to sharing his story with everyone.
